Adding color to a space can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. At Blinds & Designs serving Marin County, we’ve got a few tips for how to add color and help your home achieve the look you’ll love. If you’re having trouble deciding on color, consider adding earth tones, which can make a home warm and inviting. Read on for more!

About Earth Tones

Both trendy and classic, the colors of nature can add a sense of balance and calm. Earth tones are friendly and contemporary, and they bring welcoming vibes. They’re best for the rooms where people tend to gather, like living rooms and family rooms; however, they’re also good for bedrooms and kitchens.

Choosing Earth Tones

You’ll want to find the right combination of earth tones, which, because they can vary, can mean some trial and error. Colors that pair well include red brick with ashy gray, ivory with terracotta, deep brown with charcoal, and tan with forest green. You might consider mimicking the natural world: use warm browns (think dirt) with olive (think fall leaves). Stay away from colors that are glossy or shiny, because they’ll look unnatural. Be sure that your larger pieces, such as a rug or bedding, are in the muted tones.

Bring Dimension to Your Room

You’ll find that earth tones tend to pop more when you add texture, such as décor made with burlap, cement, or wood or things that are woven. Bring in textured wallpaper for an earthy statement or choose a landscape print. Layering can also help earth tones gain traction in a space. Consider side panels beside existing window treatments, which can make the space feel intentional and add visual interest.

Window Fashions for Earth Tones

Hunter Douglas offers treatments that bring a natural look, such as Provenance® Woven Wood Shades, which are made from woods, reeds, grasses, or bamboo and which filter light beautifully. They also offer Vignette® Roman Shades, which will add a sense of elegance and style and which come in over 25 fabric and color choices that will add to or complement your earth tones. And for that layered look, consider the fabrics and variety in our custom drapery options where you’ll also find coordinating hardware and accessories that will tie the entire look together.
