Bring Contemporary Style to Your Interior Design
People have many reasons for wanting to update the look of a home. Weary of the old style, never really had a style, combining styles. No matter the reason, it’s not as hard as some might think to change a look in a room or a home. At Blinds & Designs serving San Francisco and Marin County, we’ll be happy to help you determine how best to update your interior design, including adding an element of contemporary style. The Hallmarks of Contemporary Design
People frequently confuse “contemporary” with “modern” (the words are, after all, synonyms), but in truth, the two design styles are quite different. Contemporary design includes trending pieces and styles, while modern is rooted in the mid-1900s. With contemporary style, you’ll see more softening: rounded, clean lines and a base of neutral colors (with some pops of color in accents). It is simple and sophisticated, with updated materials and on-trend shapes and textures.
Less Is More
Contemporary design means uncluttered spaces. Too much décor brings the look down. Go through your décor and keep only the pieces you truly love—let the rest go. You’ll see that the space will feel updated and fresh.
Neutral Colors for the Base
Ground your base color in neutrals such as beige, gray, white, and cream, as well as black. You can add pops of color through accessories, artwork, or window fashions. If you decide to make your walls a bright color, use neutrals everywhere else.
Add Some Texture
Textures are a key component of contemporary design. You can add them through metal, stone, glass, and textiles (such as silk, wool, linen, and cotton). Add accent pillows or throw rugs in textured fabrics of neutral or plain colors. Houseplants are eco-friendly and can soften a space by adding unique shapes and gentle greens. And window treatments can bring some natural texture to the room. Consider Provenance® Woven Woods, which are made from natural reeds, woods, grass, and bamboo, to add nature to the room.
