Time to Refresh Your Home Space?
Are you tired of how a room (or your whole house) looks right now? Ready for a change but unsure of where to start? Never fear—at Blinds & Designs serving Marin County and San Francisco, we’ve got a number of thoughts on how to refresh a room, and many of them won’t cost a thing except a little time. Check them out below!
Update Your Sofa
Your couch might have a number of years left in it, but it might also look a little dated or worn. And its look could be bringing down the vibe for your entire room. Luckily, a number of slipcover options are out there. You can find them in a variety of fabrics, in any color or pattern you choose, and even in popular upholstery choices such as suede, brocade, and damask. You can spend just a few dollars at a home store; these types of covers can work and certainly help the look of a room, but bear in mind that these covers aren’t fitted to your exact sofa, and they might end up getting rumpled. And if you have a sectional, the odds of finding an off-the-shelf solution grow slimmer. In these instances, you can find covers for each individual cushion. You might be amazed at how versatile your look can become!
Add Texture and Color
Use complementary decorative pillows to add unique textures, patterns, softness, and depth to a room. Add an area rug to define a conversation area or add pizzazz to any room. Try placing your rug at an angle, such as under a coffee table, to help it stand out. Rugs are a great way to add a new color to any room, or freshen up otherwise dull floors. Finally, say “no” to clutter. Nothing diminishes the look of a room more than clutter. Clear the clutter by using crafty storage spaces for papers, mail, toys, coats, and other items that can give a room a disorganized, messy feel.
Repurpose Elements
A quick search in your storage area might turn up something unexpected—have you been hiding a vase for years? What about switching out a current plant pot for one that’s gathering dust in your garage? If you’ve got serving pieces you love but only use for special occasions, what’s stopping you from repurposing it for decoration? A beautiful serving bowl could become home to cut flowers, or you can fill it with water and add floating candles for a charming centerpiece. Or simply rearrange your wall art—swap out pieces in one room for pieces in another to create a new look and feel.
Hide Unsightly Areas
If you don’t have the funds for a full remodel but are tired of seeing certain elements in a room, find ways to hide them. Lean cutting boards or framed art against a wall to hide ugly outlets or bad areas of backsplash. Add large elements like tall plants or full-length mirrors to draw the eye away from that tile you absolutely hate.
Introduce New Elements
You might be surprised at how small elements can impact a room—bring in new hardware for your drawer or door pulls, change out faucets, find fun new outlet covers and light switch plates to add color and visual interest. You can even keep some of the same features but display them differently, like hanging a framed picture from the end of a shelf instead of against the wall to add dimension and an element of surprise.
Update Window Coverings
You don’t have to get all new window treatments to breathe new life into the ones you already have—you can simply add side panels or drapery to add depth and dimension to the space. With custom fabrics and hardware, the window and the whole room will look more elegant, sophisticated, and luxe.
