Mixing and Matching Window Treatments
You might have noticed in other posts that we’re pretty big supporters of layering at the window by adding drapery or side panels to a treatment that’s on the glass. But you might not be aware that there are other ways to mix and match window fashions, and, with the right combination, you can get the best in privacy, light control, and aesthetics. At Blinds & Designs serving Marin County and San Francisco, we’ve got a number of tips for making your windows look great—check a few out below and be sure to contact one of our consultants for more.
Sheer Curtains With Shades
In rooms where you want beautifully diffused light as well as privacy, semi-sheer curtains matched with the right shade can make a fun statement. A good Hunter Douglas shade option is the Provenance® Woven Wood Shade, which is made from natural reeds, grasses, and bamboo. This product is highly durable, with minimal breaking, bowing, or stretching, and you select from a number of colorways to match your décor. In this scenario, the shade does the “heavy lifting”: it will draw the eye and filter the light. For the curtains, although you could choose a thicker fabric, going with a semi-sheer makes Provenance the star.
Roman Shades With Light-Filtering Curtains
Alternatively, you can put room-darkening fabrics against the glass and light-filtering curtains on top. This style works very well in bedrooms or media rooms, where you’re more likely to appreciate darkness. Hunter Douglas Vignette® Roman Shades come in a number of luxurious, high-quality fabrics in flat or full folds. They also offer the dual benefit of energy efficiency when lowered because they act as insulation on the window. When the shades are up, the light-filtering curtains filter the natural light while still offering privacy.
Café Curtains With Shades
For a look that’s a little off the beaten path, try combining café curtains on the bottom of the window with light-filtering shades on the top half of the window. This cozy option works well in a kitchen, a sunroom, or any space with that welcoming, “come sit here” vibe.
Double the Fabrics
If privacy isn’t your main concern and you’re interested in an ultra-luxe look, consider doubling up thicker drapery fabrics. A good combo is a patterned fabric matched with one in a complementary solid color—this look will make a design statement while pulling together the room’s overall look.
