Minimalist Style

In interior design, you can find lots of different styles, from classic to contemporary to modern and more. And at Blinds & Designs serving Marin County and the greater Bay Area in San Francisco, we have window treatments that can complement them all, even if your aesthetic is minimalist. Not sure what that is? Read on to learn a little about this popular style.

Intentionally Pared Down

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a renowned German-American architect and interior designer in the 20th century, coined the phrase “less is more,” which is a general philosophy of minimalism. And while the trend has been around for decades, it’s become increasingly popular lately because of the drive toward sustainability. It isn’t about having nothing but rather about having only what you need—for example, if you notice you don’t use a particular end table, you might remove it from the space. And the things you keep are those that are the most functional for your needs, including smart storage, for example.

Characteristics of Minimalism

Minimalist style is characterized by clean lines, neutral base colors with stark contrasts, simple shapes, no excessive furniture or décor, an open floor plan, and natural light. The emphasis in the space is on what’s needed versus what is fluff. It’s uncluttered, purposeful, peaceful, and calming.

Creating a Minimalist Space

One of the main ways to achieve minimalism is to declutter. Remove all but your most beloved pieces of décor and art. Keep only the elements and furniture that you truly need and enjoy, without necessarily thinking of a certain look. If you are going to bring something new into the space, stick to elements that are timeless and simple, so you don’t have to update too soon. And always remember to make it comfortable for you—after all, you’re living in the space, so you’ll see and move in the space daily.

Window Treatments for Minimalist Style

The best complements to minimalist style have clean lines, useful functionality, and simplicity.  Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades are an excellent option. They offer smooth, flawless operation and come in over 350 color and fabric choices, including complementary neutrals or colors that can add contrast to the space. Silhouette® Sheer Shades also work well for minimalism, with their simple lines and sheer fabric that beautifully filters natural light. Duette® Cellular Shades add texture to the window; plus, their honeycomb construction offers energy-saving functionality. Finally, Vignette® Modern Roman Shades offer no exposed rear cords for a clutter-free look at the window.
