How to Select Window Treatments For Your Home

At Blinds & Designs serving Marin County and the greater Bay Area, we know that selecting the right window treatments can be overwhelming—there are just so many options and decisions. Luckily, we have decades of experience in the industry and can offer knowledge-based advice and guidance as you determine which products are right for you. If you’re ready to shop for new window fashions, check out our primer below and be sure to contact one of our specialists for specific advice on your unique situation.

Window Treatments for Light and Privacy Control

Bedrooms usually need the greatest light and privacy control, so if you’re looking for a bedroom solution, consider Duette® Architella® shades. They’re created with a honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb design to provide sound absorption, light control, and insulation. Add to them the LightLock® Room Darkening System, a unique U-shaped series of channels that block light from the sides, and you’ll have a dark, quiet, peaceful retreat for your slumber. For other rooms, you might be looking to both diffuse natural sunlight and have some privacy. In that case, look to Silhouette® Sheer Shades, which have vanes that float between sheer fabrics that allow for excellent view-through while also balancing light and privacy needs.

Consider Your Aesthetic Goals

Your style is your own, and your window treatments should reflect that. Consider how a window treatment’s pattern, color, and texture will look with the rest of your décor—also think long-term: will your treatments evolve as your aesthetics do? One long-term solution that’s also great for a modern or minimalist look is the Designer Roller Shade. If you prefer a more  sophisticated look, consider Vignette® Modern Roman Shades. To create drama and dimension in the room, explore mix-and-match layering options, including using custom drapery or side panels.

Maintenance Preferences

At Blinds & Designs, many of our clients prefer low-maintenance treatments, such as blinds. To clean them, you can quickly dust them with a duster or wipe them with a damp cloth and move on with your day. Shades take a little more work in that you’ll need to add a vacuum attachment, but if that’s OK with you, shades could be good. You might be able to simply toss your curtains in the wash, but always learn the fabric recommendations first. Other treatments might take more intense care, which is fine, but it’s best know what you’re getting into before you make your final purchase decision.
