Older window treatments were usually designed with corded operating systems, which made sense back in the day. However, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards for children and pets. If infants and toddlers can reach dangling cords, they could be strangled, which might result in brain damage or death. That’s why the Window Covering Safety Council highlights October as a time to remind homeowners about the importance of increasing in-home safety when it comes to their window fashions.

If your window coverings are the old-school corded kind, now might be an excellent time to consider buying new ones. Also, move children’s cribs and beds away from corded treatments (ideally on the other side of the room if possible).
