Many homeowners are unaware of the number of hazards in their homes, especially the things that can harm young children and pets. At Blinds & Designs serving San Francisco and Marin County, we’re passionate about helping our clients recognize the dangers, especially when it comes to their window fashions. And right now, it’s National Window Covering Safety Month, so what better time is there to talk about increasing safety than right now? Read on to learn about how to increase the safety of your window treatments, and be sure to contact one of our representatives if you want more information.

Dangling Cord Dangers

Older window treatments were usually designed with corded operating systems, which made sense back in the day. However, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards for children and pets. If infants and toddlers can reach dangling cords, they could be strangled, which might result in brain damage or death. That’s why the Window Covering Safety Council highlights October as a time to remind homeowners about the importance of increasing in-home safety when it comes to their window fashions.

Safe Operating Systems From Hunter Douglas

If your window coverings are the old-school corded kind, now might be an excellent time to consider buying new ones. With new Hunter Douglas window fashions, you can select from a number of child- and pet-safe lift systems. For example, you could choose SimpleLift™, which lets you raise and lower the treatment with the simple touch of a button on the bottom rail. Or you might be inclined toward UltraGlide®, a single retractable cord or wand or even LiteRise®, which lets you raise and lower the treatment with simple pressure from your hand. Finally, the cream of the Hunter Douglas crop is PowerView® Automation, a fully programmable motorized system that lets you adjust your window treatments based on programming or at any time, even if you’re not at home.

Alternatives

If you’re not ready to take the step toward new treatments just yet, that’s OK. You can still take other precautions, including shortening dangling cords or tucking them up and out of reach of a child’s reach. Also, move children’s cribs and beds away from corded treatments (ideally on the other side of the room if possible). Finally, you can order a free retrofit kit that will help you make your cords as safe as possible. Just go to https://windowcoverings.org/retrofit-your-windows/ and follow the instructions.
