The Focal Point of a Room
One of the best ways to design a room is to decorate around its main focal point. And, of course, to do that, you need to determine what that point is. At Blinds & Designs serving Marin County, we know it can be daunting to decorate or redecorate a space, particularly if you don’t have a lot of experience in that arena. So we’ve put together some ideas for how to start. Check them out below.

As you step into the room, what part draws your eye? Generally, that’s going to be the focal point of the room. You might notice that it’s your window, the fireplace, a large piece of furniture, particular artwork, or the TV. In many rooms, the window can carry a strong line and is usually defined by natural light, so frequently, the window will be the focus.
If the Window Is Your Focal Point
For your window to be the true focal point of your room, be sure it holds up to scrutiny in terms of how it catches the eye. It should be visually attractive from both the inside and the outside. As you consider window fashions for this focal point, be aware that they can advance or recede into a room based on color, texture, and pattern. Timeless colors and textures such as neutrals or linens will add softness. Adding layers through drapery or side panels can bring depth and drama through color or pattern, or they can help the window recede into the room if they’re of the same color and look as the base window treatment. Color will make a window advance into the room and can make other design elements recede. To help your window treatments look the best from the outside, make them match as closely as possible by ensuring they are the same color and carry the same lines.
Styles
As you approach decorating the window, consider a few things, such as the view. If you have an attractive view, you’ll likely want to accentuate it; if it’s not great, you’ll probably want to play it down. Also, consider the function of your window fashion. For example, for a horizontal opening, you can choose from options such as the top-down/bottom-up operating feature, which lets you open from the top, from the bottom, or both. This operation works well in kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms, and you can add it to Hunter Douglas such as Duette® Cellular Shades, Solera® Soft Shades, and Provenance® Woven Woods. If you have a larger window or a slider, look at vertically oriented possibilities. Vertical products can open in the middle, go to one side, or totally disappear. Some vertical products from Hunter Douglas include Duette® Vertiglide™ Cellular Shades, Skyline® Gliding Panels, and Vignette® Modern Roman Shades.
