Why Not Redecorate?

Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters

When we sell a home, we stage it to get it looking its best. And usually at that point, we look around and wonder why we didn’t do it sooner—what a great-looking home it turned out to be! So why wait? Why not redecorate now? At Blinds & Designs serving the greater San Francisco area, we’ve got some ideas for how to update your home. Read on to learn more!

Target the Floor First

Often, homes have different, disparate types of flooring that offers different colors and looks. That can make a house look choppy and busy. Consider making your flooring consistent throughout your home—hardwood is often a great choice because it doesn’t show wear and tear like carpeting, and most people can get large area rugs to warm it up. As you plan, remember that flooring is expensive—if you can’t take care of all of it at once, at least try to keep the color similar throughout the downstairs area.

Tackle Walls Next

Painting is an inexpensive way to improve the look of your home. You can add personality and pizzazz through color. One thought is to keep the hall a neutral color, with all rooms that can be seen from the front door in coordinating hues. You can be more creative with color in the back of the house and upstairs. Every paint manufacturer has a good, better, and best line of paint. Buying the better paint may cost more but, in the long run, it will cut down on your labor. One good coat is a lot less expensive than multiple bad coats.

Move to Windows Last

Window treatments add beauty, provide privacy, control light, and offer UV protection for your home furnishings. If the window is the focal point, you’ll want to use treatments that enhance it. Consider how you want to handle light control. Will you want to diffuse light or deflect it? Deflected light is hard to look at and will create shadows. However, that might be interesting for your room. Choose plantation shutters and vertical and horizontal blinds for deflecting light. Diffusing light creates a softer look. Roman Shades are a great option to diffuse light. Window treatments that will diffuse light include Hunter Douglas Silhouette® window shading and Hunter Douglas Duette® honeycomb shades.
