Determine Your Goals
When you start on your search for new window treatments, remember that look and beauty is important, but make sure your selection will be able to meet your goals and needs as well, including how much light and privacy control you want, whether you want to maintain a full view outside, and other options. Not all window treatments offer the same things, so you need to understand the differences.
Lifters
Considered “lifters,” shades either raise or lower to provide either full view-through to the outside or privacy. They come in the largest color palette available and in the full range of opacities, from light-filtering to blackout. You can choose from honeycomb shades, woven wood shades, roller or screen shades, or Roman shades.
Tilters
Considered “tilters,” blinds can be lifted, but are usually operated at the vanes level—tilted open or closed—to provide the amount of light and privacy you need. Shutters are a different animal but are considered “tilters” too. The louvers can be tilted open or closed, and the panels can be swung open for full view-through. Both shutters and blinds come in aluminum, wood, faux wood, poly materials, and vinyl, as well as in a variety of paint stains and slat or louver sizes.
