Ways to Soundproof Your Home
If you find that your home environment is too loud (whether from traffic noise, barking dogs, or construction), you might be itching to figure out a way to soundproof one or more rooms. After all, having a quiet place to relax after a hard day’s work is important. At Blinds & Designs serving Marin County, we like to help our customers achieve the calming environment they desire and deserve. Check out our soundproofing tips below!
Noise-Reducing Changes
You might be surprised by some of the steps you can take to reduce noise in your home. For one, block noise by replacing hollow doors with solid-core ones. To prevent sound leaking, weatherstrip door frame gaps and use a door sweep. Add acoustic panels or fabric wall hangings to absorb sound, or take it a step further by doubling up your drywall. Use underlayers of cork, rubber, or foam under your flooring to reduce vibrations; add acoustic tiles to the ceiling to reduce noise from upper floors. Outside the home, consider adding hedges to block noise, particularly if you live on a busy street; one side benefit is the aesthetic appeal you add to your view.
Use Window Treatments
Window fashions can go a long way toward reducing unwanted sounds. If you don’t currently have treatments, you’ll see a great reduction in noise simply by adding any type. However, you could also consider those that will actively absorb sound and truly reduce unwanted noise. One exceptional option is honeycomb-style shades. You could explore Duette® Cellular Shades or Sonnette® Cellular Shades, which are both designed to insulate the windows. Their construction includes honeycomb-shaped pockets that trap air and sound, greatly reducing noise in a space. Roman Shades are another great option. Consider Providence® Woven Wood Shades and Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, which both also provide great aesthetics and can offer sophistication and timeless appeal. If you need to cover a sliding glass door or a wall of windows, a good vertical option is Cadence® Vertical Blinds, which offer the look of plush drapery folds and are available in a number of fabric and color selections. If you’re interested in seeing any of these options (and more) in person, be sure to contact one of our consultants today!
