Window Fashions: What You Should and Shouldn’t Do
Knowing the best practices of window treatments (and, in fact, home decorating in general), can seem overwhelming. But at Blinds & Designs serving Marin County and San Francisco, we’re happy to guide you through the entire process of buying new window treatments, from selection through installation and styling. See below for a few ideas that could help you as you determine how you’d like your room to look.
How to Mount Drapery
Where drapery is mounted on the window can deeply impact the room’s overall look and feel. To make the room seem bigger, DO mount the rod a foot or more above the window. Also, extend the rod 4 or more inches on either side of the window to create a larger statement. To avoid making the window seems smaller, DON’T hang drapery right above the frame. Furthermore, having the rod the same length as the window won’t give you any flexibility when you slide the drapes open—it will just crowd the window and let in less light.
Drapery and Curtain Length
For a more luxe, less stunted look to your curtains or drapery, DO go long, so the cloth either puddles on the floor, just skims the floor, or is only about an inch above the floor (same goes for the windowsill with curtains). DON’T skimp on length. Keeping your drapery or curtains too short will make your room look less sophisticated.
Make Use of Sunlight
The more natural light you can use, the more your room will feel, well, natural. Try to use artificial light sources only when needed. To let Mother Nature transform the look of your space, DO choose window treatments that diffuse light spectacularly, such as Silhouette® Shades from Hunter Douglas. But regardless, be sure to treat it instead of leaving it wide open: DON’T forget about privacy control. At night, your room becomes a fishbowl, and you’re in plain sight for all those peeping toms out there.
Styling the Window
Dressing your window is a lot like selecting a striking wardrobe, and to do it right, you have a lot of options. One of our favorites: DO layer treatments. This results in greater style, depth, and dimension and will make your window a focal point. On top of that, it will make your window feel like a work of art, especially if you play with pattern, color, and proportion. That all said, DON’T take it too far. You’ll make your room seem cheap instead of stylish if you have too many layers or create too heavy a look. By the same token, DON’T settle for “just OK.” If your treatments are broken, worn, or outdated, your room’s overall look will be shabby, which will reflect in your home. Create a window that “wows” by contacting a Blinds & Designs consultant today.
