Non-standard windows such as arches, ovals, and hexagons can seem like a puzzle to treat. Same can be said for skylights. However, with innovations from Hunter Douglas, the puzzle is actually so easy to solve. At Blinds & Designs serving Marin County, we want to help you find the right covering for your needs, style, and budget. If you have a skylight you’ve been puzzling over, give us a shout, and we’ll help you find the right piece.

Covering Skylights

If you’re lucky enough to have a skylight in your home, you know what a blessing it can be, from adding natural light to bringing dimension and architectural interest to a room. However, skylights can sometimes be a drawback because the direct overhead sunlight has a chance to cause damage to floors and furniture from the intense UV rays. Luckily, by using the right window treatment, you can enjoy the benefits of your skylight while reducing the drawbacks. You just need to follow a few key principles.

  • Consider the needs of the space. Different rooms require different levels of light-blocking. In a bedroom, for example, you might want to block as much light as possible, while in a kitchen or sunroom, you might want to keep as much of that beautiful natural light as you can. You can find both room-darkening and light-diffusing options with Hunter Douglas.
  • Think about preserving your flooring and furniture. UV rays can wreak havoc on floors, furniture, cabinets, and artwork. Even if you know you want to have as much natural light as possible through your skylight, be sure to use a treatment that will help reduce the damage from UV rays. To block UV rays while still getting some light in the room, check out Somner® Custom Vertical Blinds or Vertical Solutions® Vertical Blinds, which each offer 75% UV ray protection.
  • Decide on how you want to operate your skylight treatment. Being overhead, skylights are, of course, generally out of easy reach. You’ll want to determine the best way to operate your treatment, whether it’s remotely or with another solution. With Hunter Douglas, you can choose from the Skylift™ or Simplicity™ system (which operate manually) or PowerView® Motorization (which lets you operate your treatment remotely, even if you’re halfway around the world).
